The Development of Mexico’s Riviera Maya

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Riviera Maya has been one of the most active regions for my Real Estate Trend Alert group…and one of the most profitable for RETA members in terms of rental income and capital appreciation.

The Riviera Maya stretches from Cancún in the north, down to Tulum about 80 miles (and one hour and 40 minutes’ drive) to the south, passing through Playa del Carmen, Akumal, and other beach towns along the way. It features powdery white-sand beaches, azure Caribbean waters, and no shortage of fun things to do, from watersports to tours of ancient Mayan ruins to fine dining to exciting nightlife.

And each town has its own unique character. There are the massive all-inclusive resorts of Cancún, all lined up along the beach in the hotel zone. Playa is chic and sophisticated. Akumal is a quiet, mostly residential town. And bohemian Tulum is known for the party scene and wellness retreats—quite a combination.

There really is something—and some place—for everybody on the Riviera Maya.

But just 50 years ago this coast was home to small fishing villages, farms, and jungle. Today, it’s one of the world’s most popular vacation destinations drawing millions each year. Among them vacationers and, in a trend that was already going but was accelerated by the pandemic, remote workers.

As I explain in this video, it’s a natural evolution of the Path of Progress in this region…
